AGRITOURISM IN SICILY: Villa Carcara

     Villa carcara, has been built at the end of the 19th century and fully restored. Villa carcara , has an interior courtyard and a picturesque farmhouse, where the farmer and his family live and is composed of two lovely old flats, which are available all year long.
    It is located at 8 km from Marina di Ragusa, which is a very well known sea resort in the South East coast of Sicily, Italy, and 9 km from Ragusa, famous for its Baroque buildings and for Ragusa Ibla, its old historical centre full of Baroque churches, stately palaces, small streets and evocative stairways.
    Villa carcara, offers a very relaxing country holiday but lively attractions are available at the sea-side resorts in the area if you wish: Marina di Ragusa, Punta Secca, Donnalucata, Sampieri, Pozzallo, (from where you can reach the Island of Malta by catamaran for a one day visit) are full of animation, shops, some of the most famous discotheques in Eastern Sicily, restaurants and outdoor cinemas.
This side of the Sicilian South-Eastern coast has beautiful beaches, a major attraction for all tourists that come to Sicily to spend a totally relaxing holiday. Inland it also offers different culture itineraries: Kamarina with its interesting museum; the castle of Donnafugata; the baroque city of Noto; Piazza Armerina with its Roman "Villa del Casale". They all are evidence of past dominations and cultures together with Syracuse, which is a short distance away (80 Km) with its Greek theatre where each year in summer, classical representations are held; Agrigento (150km) with its splendid Greek temples; Taormina (250 km) famous around the world for its beauty, and other cities full of history and culture.
    The ground floor apartment of VILLA CARCARA (dating back to the beginning of 19th century) has twelve beds and has its entrance from an old courtyard. It has a lovely kitchen- living room (50 square metres big), three double rooms with three lofts, (total beds 12 ), four bathrooms with shower,a little kitchen and a backcourt with garden. The apartment can be divided; the flat has an independent heating system.
    THe first floor apartment has about 170 square metres and has 7 beds + 2. It has its entrance from the old courtyard. In the apartment there are: a living room with a fire-place facing a beautifully furnished terrace, which is 100 square metres and has a view with the sea on the horizon, a dining room, a kitchen, a single bedroom with access onto the terrace from which it is possible to enjoy a wonderful view of the far away sea, a double bedroom with private bathroom, another double bedroom, a twin bedroom and an other bathroom with shower. Finally the house has an other 70 square metres big terrace.
    The whole area has an exceptionally warm climate with beautiful sunny days in winter even 15/16C°, pleasantly ventilated in summer above 26C°. As far as climate is concerned the best time to visit our area is autumn and spring; however summer temperatures are ideal if you want to enjoy an intense and relaxing sea-side holiday. Alternative and agritourism enterprises allow farmers and ranchers to earn higher profits by replacing or supplementing traditional farm operations with innovative on-farm or on-ranch ventures.
Alternative enterprises can take many forms. They can produce food and fiber or have little to do with agriculture. They can produce new or unique crops or livestock or add value to traditional agricultural products. They can produce fun, recreation, nature-based, or educational products. They can rely on traditional farm practices or use alternative methods, such as organic systems. They can be labor and resource intensive or require few inputs. They can operate seasonally, or year-round.
But they all have a common theme: farmers and ranchers rely on the natural resources on their land - the soil, water, air, plants, wildlife, and scenery - to keep their family on the farm and the farm in their family. They also require sound land care. Since the land's resources generate income, conserving those resources makes good business sense.
