Splendid shores with wide sunny beaches of end gilded sand, endowed with
first-rate tourist services, tourist villages like that of Kamarina and Kastalia,
Marispica and Baia Samuele included, completes the image of the Italian province of Ragusa
that certainly deserves to be visited. Today it is important point of reference for anyone
who wants to spend holidays to the seaside.
To few kilometers from Ragusa, toward south, leaned out on the African sea,
there is Marina of Ragusa, small port and seaside resort, called once Mazzarelli, Arabic
name that means "small village."
Village of fishermen, port destined to the export of carrube, cereals, cheese, etc.,
Marina di Ragusa was endowed with a tower of sighting and defense against the piratical
raids in the XVI century
But the development for Marina di Ragusa began toward 1870 when in Ragusa
they opened the first mines of asphalt that, after the extraction, was transported and
embarked to asphalt the roads of the whole world: Paris, Berlin, London, Amsterdam, Buenos
Aires, Peking, etc. The expansion takes again from the years '60 when Marina of Ragusa
becomes an important holiday resort.
The beaches of Marina di Ragusa are spectacular: golden sand, clear water,
clean and uncrowded beaches. A real paradise just a short distance from the city. Here is
a list of beaches of province of Ragusa for you that you just can't miss if you still have
a bit of time to visit the area around Ragusa.
Marina di Ragusa
This is the most famous seaside resort in this part of Sicily: there are modern, efficient
tourist facilities, beautiful beaches and a lively nightlife. Administratively
belonging to Ragusa, Marina di Ragusa is the most renowned and the best equipped of the
provinces summer resorts. Endowed with services and plenty of accomodation and
entertainment facilities, it is crowded in the summer months and densely populated all the
year round, hence regarded as a town in its own right. Marina di Ragusa grew on the former
Mazzarelli its name until 1928 and boasts important outputs of
asphalt-stone, that is exported to all Italy, and carob, from which alcohol is obtained.
The new centre developed around an old tower, built, as the one in Pozzallo, by the
Cabreras, counts of Modica, to guard against attacks from the sea. Tourism and
agriculture, notably the hothouse cultivation, are the major resouces of Marina di Ragusa.
Small and medium size commercial businesses have also grown in the last years. Marina of
Ragusa is about to be endowed with a tourist port that will welcome over 800 boats and it
will be the third Hub of Sicily.
Marina di Modica
This place is beautiful at any time of year, with its milder climate compared to the city.
The bay is a surf and windsurf lovers paradise, thanks to its perfect exposure to
the winds.
Pozzallo
This beach is 30km from Ragusa, looking out onto the sea and with splendid Mediterranean
scrub behind it, where carob trees dominate the landscape. The beaches are truly
wonderful, the water is crystal-clear and the landscape is historically and culturally
interesting. The most important monument in this medieval village is the majestic Torre
Cabrera, a tower built around 1400 to defend the place from pirate attacks.
Sampieri
This tiny village near to Scicli and Modica is famous for its beautiful beach looking out
onto the "burnt factory" that was a brick factory partly destroyed many years
ago by a fire. The remains of the building are still part and parcel of the landscape. The
village is also characteristic, with its stone cottages that look romantically out to sea.
